Time To Spay Your Puppy? How To Ensure A Safe Recovery

If it's time to schedule your puppies spaying, it's time to plan for the recovery period. Reproductive surgery is a major procedure for your puppy. They may need some extra help during the recovery. On top of the post-operative instructions you'll get from the vet, here are some tips you can use to care for your puppy during recovery.

Let Them Stay the Extra Day

You may want to get your puppy home as soon as possible after their surgery. But, they're going to need time to rest. It may take several hours for your puppy to recover from the anesthesia. Not only that, there may be some residual pain that your puppy will need help with. The best thing you can do is have your puppy stay an extra day at the veterinarians office. The office stay will provide the care your puppy needs after surgery.

Be Prepared for Nausea

If your puppy needs reproductive surgery, prepare for the nausea. Anesthesia can leave your puppy with an upset stomach. Unfortunately, the upset stomach can lead to vomiting. If you're not prepared, your puppy may vomit throughout the house. Before your puppy comes home from the vet, prepare a recovery area for them. Cover the floor with puppy pads. That way, if your puppy vomits, you can throw the pads away. Be sure to place a clean towel on the floor for your puppy to rest on.

Ease Your Dogs Cough

After surgery, your puppy may develop a dry cough. That's normal. The anesthesia tube can cause throat irritation. Your puppy may cough for a few days. You can help ease the discomfort by placing a humidifier in your puppy's recovery area. The moist air helps soothe your puppy's irritated throat. If your puppy's cough gets worse, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Watch for Infection

While your puppy recovers from their spaying, you'll need to watch for infection. This is especially important during the first few days after surgery. The most important thing you can do is keep the wound site clean and dry. Doing those two things can help reduce the risk of infection. If the wound becomes red and swollen, get immediate medical attention for your puppy. You should also keep an eye on the discharge. A foul smelling discharge should also get medical attention.

Keep your puppy comfortable after they undergo spay and neuter surgery. Use the tips provided here to help ensure a problem-free recovery for your puppy.
